The Uphold exchange acquired the European card issuer Optimus Cards UK Limited to be able to launch its card in Europe.

JP Thieriot, CEO of Uphold, said the launch in Europe follows a successful deployment in the United States:

From April, we plan to launch the first debit card on the Optimus platform in Europe. The card has already proven itself to our US customers, offering a unique combination of utility, convenience and rewards in cryptocurrency.

The new card will support 24 cryptocurrencies, 27 currencies and four precious metals

Optimus is one of the largest issuers of debit and credit cards in Europe. The company is regulated by the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) as an electronic money institution and acts as a card issuer and payments facilitator. Optimus services are compatible with major platforms like Apple Pay and Google Pay.

Uphold did not disclose the cost of the acquisition.
